Who can resist the siren call of the mermaid? The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria (according to Wikipedia), in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same tradition), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans. I liek the last part the best!

I heard the mermaids singing

And before I knew it, there were three! I plan to have them swim among my hostas. These foil shapes will be covered in paper, then paverpol and paint. Paverpol is marvellous for outdoor art. I like the silver, but don't want it to look like tin foil art. 

I am pleased with the shape, taking inspiration from the whales.  Once I had one started, I began thinking about another and before I knew it, I had a little production line going! The beauty of three is you can work on one, let it dry and move on.  

Since I was working in my studio among my bridal silks, I didn't want to get the paverpol out. I usually do that in the back porch at home. They needed a fin, but I also needed a way to attach it. Along came Mod Podge!  I saw a blog post on craftgossip.com. Someone had covered a table in tin foil.  Very cool!  Well, it attached the fin, without having to manipulate a whole new layer.  You can't see it in the photo.  That's for next time!

Bane of my existence

I have been bookkeeping for hours. Sorted out a glitch in my method which took a while. Paid my bills and didn't do anything creative today, except get my newsletter organised.

It was a welcome relief, to look at what other designers are doing, especially when I am not doing anything. Take Sherry Goshon. Her work has a beauty to it, a dreamy quality. I am organising a mermaid challenge (with prizes!) on Doll Street. Sherry stepped right up and offered her Tashina class. Isn't she a beauty? I'm inspired, even if I can't get near a mermaid today.

Visions of creations can dance in my head while I deliver rented costumes back to the theatre I borrowed them from...
