Do you know what canes are?

You might think of a walking stick when you think of canes, but if you are into polymer clay, you'll know canes are something else!

Canes are a way of creating patterns and designs in polymer clay. The idea is that you pile up the colors in a pattern, then stretch out the resulting pile into a cane, compressing it until it gets longer and thinner, melding the sections together. The cane can then be sliced and the pattern used repeatedly. The results are amazing.

 Look at these earrings by Marie Segal. Marie created these patterns by making canes and sliced them to reveal the design. Then the slices were used to construct the earrings.

 

Now take a look at this guy:

His clothing and feathers are made from patterned polymer. Cool, right? The bird was created by Dawn Schiller.

Here's a detail of the patterns. Dawn and Marie got together with this character and made a whole class out of it! One artists teaches you how to sculpt the head and legs, the other, how to make the patterned canes, which are used to finish Thomas T Bird!

This is the second video on doll making from Patti.

This video continues to inspire, just as the first one did. Patti leads us through her process of costuming and draping fabric to clothe your doll. You'll soon be flying solo, inspired by Patti's easy methods of draping and pattern making. The face painting techniques add new ways of using products like watercolors to your skill set. It's a great look inside Patti's world, at her techniques, her process and her inspirations. I'm inspired!

New classes

It's been a busy week for me. I've had no time to create for myself, I've been so busy with the creative people at Doll street! I've been adding new things to the pattern shop and new classes.

I won't be going to AFICC this year. These doll gatherings are a blast. I am sad to miss out on the fun. Still, Dawn Schiller is teaching there and debuting her Egg-Static class on Doll Street! Hooray! I'm honoured she chose to debut it on Doll Street. I will open the class to registration on Monday.

You know I love dragons. well, Judith prior sent me pictures of Ambrose and I had to have this class! This cloth dragon is needle sculpted and painted in unusual ways. Very hot! (Dragons can't be Cool, because they are so Hot!)
